Infosys is overhauling its hiring practice to beef up its consulting business. From the existing pyramid staff structure, the Bangalore-based IT major is shifting towards the diamond pattern by going in for more senior-level executives.

This is to lend strong support to the top management and impart a much needed boost to the fledgling consulting practice.

S Gopalakrishnan, president, COO and deputy MD of Infosys, said: "The profile of people we are hiring for our consulting business has changed. We are now hiring more senior-level people and are happy with this change, as we are getting quality people in our quest for gaining a unique position in the global consulting arena."

Infosys Consulting is going in for this change to bring in more thought leadership, which is one of the critical factors for a consulting practice to succeed. Infosys, which is closing in on the $3 billion turnover mark, is still incubating this business that is expected to be in the investment mode for the next few quarters.

Infosys has so far invested close to $20 million in Infosys Consulting since 2004, when the firm was launched.

Speaking on how this practice is shaping up, Gopalakrishnan said, "Infosys Consulting constantly updates itself with the general trends in technology in the context of globalisation and given the fact that businesses need to periodically change fundamentally in the way they operate. We are in the process of creating new services and solutions to further establish this practice."

Infosys is also tightly integrating its information technology services with the consulting vertical as one of the drivers for a business to change is technology.

"There is tight linkage between the two as we feel that the benefits of consulting should be felt across a corporation. We derive immense knowledge from our SET (software engineering and technology) Labs to identify technology trends and use that to drive business change," he added.
