Infosys hit its lifetime high of Rs 1,750 in intra-day trade on Friday, before closing at Rs 1,742.25, gaining 2.02 per cent over Thursday's close of Rs 1,707.75.

Its previous all-time high was recorded during the technology boom in March 2000, when the stock touched Rs 1,726.61 (adjusted against bonus shares).

Infosys hit the market with its initial public offer in February 1993 at a premium of Rs 95 for a face value of Rs 10 per share. In other words, an investment of Rs 10,500 in 100 shares made 13 years back is now valued at over Rs 2 crore (Rs 20 million) by way of appreciation and dividends.

Infosys has outperformed the BSE Sensex and IT index from the recent low touched in June 14. Since then, the market price of Infosys has appreciated by 40 per cent, compared to a 25 per cent rise in the Sensex, and a 36 per cent jump in the IT index.

The stock jumped from Rs 1,241.45 on June 14 to Rs 1,742.25 today. In contrast, the BSE Sensex moved from 8,929.44 to 11,192.46, and IT index from 3,043.53 to 4,139.27.

With a market capitalisation of Rs 96,469 crore (Rs 964.69 billion), Infosys tops the market capitalisation rankings for IT stocks, ahead of Tata Consultancy Services (Rs 94,753 crore), Wipro (Rs 72,563 crore), Satyam Computer Services (Rs 24,702 crore), and HCL Technologies (Rs 18,962 crore).

TCS at Rs 968.25 on Friday was eight per cent away from its all-time high market price of Rs 1,049.50 touched in April 2006.

Other tech majors, Wipro and Satyam Computer Services, are currently discounted by 15 per cent from their lifetime high market price.

Wipro traded at Rs 506.55 against its lifetime high Rs 598.90, and Satyam Computer Services at Rs 756.35 against Rs 890, touched in April this year. Infosys announced bonus shares in the ratio of 1:1 (one bonus share for every one equity share held) last month.

Since its public float in 1993, the company has paid bonus shares to its shareholders on five occasions. Four times - in 1994, 1997, 1999, and 2006 - it has paid bonus shares in the ratio of 1:1, and once, in 2004, three shares for every share held.
