HCL Founder Shiv Nadar has been awarded the Honoris Causa Doctorate of Science (D Sc) by the Indian Institute of Technology - Kharagpur. The award was presented for Nadar's outstanding contribution to computer hardware and software domain in the country.

Union Minister for Human Resources Kapil Sibal presented the award to Shiv Nadar on the 56th annual convocation ceremony of IIT Kharagpur.

The Honoris Causa Doctorate by IIT is awarded to acknowledge and felicitate distinguished personalities who have made remarkable contributions in the field of science, engineering, entrepreneurship and academics.

Shiv Nadar's name was selected by the Senate, the board of governors and the president of India, the visitor of IIT Kharagpur due to his commendable contribution as engineer entrepreneur.

"The IITs are responsible for positioning Indian engineering and technology prowess across the globe.  Receiving the Doctorate of Science from the IIT Kharagpur therefore is a true honour. IIT Kharagpur is also the first buyer of any HCL product ever" Shiv Nadar said at the felicitation function.

"My fellow founder Arjun Malhotra (chairman, Headstrong) is also an IIT Kharagpur graduate and installed IIT Kharagpur's first HCL computers as well. It just makes coming back to Kharagpur special in a more personal sort of a way," he added.

By receiving this award, Shiv Nadar now stands along side other notable recipients including Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Mother Teresa, Ratan Tata and Satyajit Ray, who have been conferred this award earlier.
