India and European Union will discuss issues of mutual interest during the first joint industrial energy conference in New Delhi next month.

Energy security, promotion of renewable sources and energy efficient technologies will be high on agenda during the interactions, officials involved in the exercise said.

European Energy Commissioner Andris Pielbalgs and Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde are scheduled to inaugurate the first India-EU Industrial Conference on Energy on April 6.

To prepare for next month's meeting, the two countries discussed issues related to energy efficiency, renewable energies, coal and clean coal conversion technologies under the ambit of two working groups set up for this purpose as part of India-EU Energy Panel. The two working groups -- on renewables and coal -- met in New Delhi on March 22 and 23.

Next month's interactions would centre around two important areas -- mutual market access for European and Indian firms in energy sector and energy market reforms, they said, adding talks would also cover steps to boost cooperation in research,

environmental policies and investment climate.

During his India visit, Pielbalgs is also likely to meet Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran under the ambit of Energy Panel.

The two sides have identified six niche areas in energy sector. These include renewable sources such as solar and wind; energy efficiency; power transmission and distribution network, LNG infrastructure and generation technologies.

The Panel had set up three working groups -- the third being in fusion energy which is discussing India's membership in international thermonuclear reactor project.
