Prasar Bharati's Direct-to-Home project would bring about a 'revolution' in television coverage with 60 per cent of the potential viewers in North-East to be brought under the project, which would also open up self-employment opportunities, its chief executive officer K S Sarma said on Wednesday.

The DTH was primarily aimed at 10 per cent of the 100 crore population of the country who could not access Doordarshan signals due to difficult terrain and other reasons and of these 1 crore belong to the North-East.

The unemployed could purchase the DTH set top boxes through bank loans and market them in rural areas, he said.

The youth could purchase the set tops boxes costing Rs 3000 and sell it at ten per cent profit to an estimated 20 lakh households in the region's interior areas not normally included by commercial dealers, Sarma said.

Prasar Bharati had networked with banks in the region for giving loans to the educated unemployed and individual viewers for purchasing the set top boxes, he said.

Doordarshan potentially covers 90 per cent of the population provided they have a television set but now only 40 crore people watch television as there are only eight crore sets in the country, Sarma said.
