India is emerging as a global hub for enterpreneurship and the country's youth is becoming increasingly self-employed," according to Tarun Das, director-general of the Confederation of Indian Industry.
Das was addressing the students of a private management school in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Comparing the Indian economy with that of China, Das said the Chinese economic growth was mainly driven by foreign direct investment, while the Indian was driven by domestic growth.
Das added that the agricultural sector will grew by 5 per cent and the gross domestic product by 6.8-7 per cent over the next few years.
He described the power sector as one of the weaker areas. "If you want quality power, you have to pay for it."
He told the management students, "We need to invest more on training and education services as you are the leaders of tomorrow for India."
Earlier in the day, Das and Piruz Khambatta, chairman of the Gujarat state council of CII, met Narendra Modi, the state chief minister, and briefed on the initiatives being undertaken in Surat as part of the Navratri Festival, which include an exhibition and conference on textiles and garments and gems & jewelleries.
"The event is expected to give a boost to the industry in these two sectors in the state," Das said.
He requested Modi to reinforce the demand from the state for an airport in Surat and also highlighted the importance of water for Gujarat.
He also outlined the plans of CII to work in partnership with the state government on projects related to water harvesting, construction of check dams on stretches of catchment areas.
Das briefed Modi on CII's plans to set up a food laboratory in the state with help from the government.
