The Confederation of Indian Industry has regretted 'causing hurt' to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. It said the chamber was committed to development in the state.

A CII convention in New Delhi last year had questioned the law and order situation in the state after communal riots broke out over the Godhra incident. Modi had not taken kindly to criticism of his government's handling of the situation.

A CII press release quoted CII Director-General Tarun Das as saying, "There was never any intention to cause pain and offence to Gujarat or its Chief Minister. CII has had the honour of participating in several developmental activities in Gujarat and wishes to continue it."

The release added that the chamber would work with the Gujarat government sincerely.

The release also quoted Das as saying that he had requested Modi to renew the partnership between the state government and CII, and the latter had responded positively and confirmed his co-operation.
