International Trade Minister David Emerson is leaving for New Delhi  to meet senior ministers, including Finance Minsiter P Chidambaram and Commerce Minister Kamal Nath.

He was to lead an 'infrastructure  business delegation' to India in March but Emerson fell sick and his trip was cancelled at the last minute. The Canadian delegation did go to India but it was led by the Parliamentary Secretary Ted Menzies and Parliamentary Secretary to Foreign Affairs Minister, Deepak Obhrai.

In a statement from Ottawa, Emerson's office says on April 18 and 19, Minister Emerson will visit New Delhi to discuss with senior ministers and business leaders range of trade and investment issues.

Before arriving in New Delhi on Thursday, Emerson will be in Pakistan to participate in the 31st Cairns Group Ministerial Meeting.

This year the meeting will take place from Tuesday to Thursday in Lahore. The Cairn Group is composed of World Trade Organisation members pressing for further agricultural reform within the WTO.

Canada has a fundamental interest in continuing to work through the WTO to further strengthen the international rules governing agricultural trade.

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister, Peter MacKay, recently complained at the gathering sponsored by Canada-India Business Council that India is not opening its agricultural sector to direct foreign investments. So, this topic is likely to form part of Emerson's discussions with two Indian Ministers -- Chidambaram and Kamal Nath.
