The combined turnover of the Indian financial markets, including the equity, derivatives, and debt markets, touched an all-time high of Rs 33,22,928 crore (Rs 33,229.28 billion) in 2002-2003, a 24.3 per cent increase over the combined turnover of Rs 26,73,821 crore (Rs 26,738.21 billion) in 2001-2002.
The aggregate turnover was Rs 29,32,290 crore (Rs 29,322.9 billion) in 2000-2001, up 43.5 per cent from the turnover of Rs 20,437,52 crore (Rs 20,437.52 billion) in 1999-2000.
The National Stock Exchange had a 64 per cent share of the total turnover of the financial markets, while the Bombay Stock Exchange had a meagre 9.52 per cent share.
The combined turnover of the equity segments of the BSE and NSE went up 13.6 per cent to Rs 9,31,952 crore (Rs 8,20,349 crore in 2001-02).
However, the Calcutta Stock Exchange and the Delhi Stock Exchange recorded a 79.9 per cent fall in their equity markets' turnover to Rs 6,269 crore (Rs 62.69 billion).
In 2002-2003, the NSE showed remarkable strength by recording a 20.4 per cent rise in equity market turnover. The BSE continued its poor showing, with a modest 2.2 per rise in equity market turnover.
The NSE had a 65.9 per cent share in the equity market turnover at Rs 6,17,986 crore (Rs 6,179.86 billion) versus the BSE's share of 33.46 per cent, at Rs 3,13,966 crore (Rs 3,139.66 billion).
The poor show by two major regional exchanges, CSE and DSE, continued with the DSE posting an aggregated turnover of Rs 10 crore (Rs 100 million) in 2002-2003 while the CSE recorded a 75.7 per cent decline in its aggregate turnover to Rs 6,259 crore (Rs 62.59 billion).
The combined derivatives market turnover on the NSE and BSE jumped four-fold to Rs 4,42,340 crore (Rs 4,423.40 billion) from Rs 1,03,748 crore (Rs 1,037.48 billion) in 2001-2002.
The NSE recorded a huge 331.6 per cent growth in notional value to Rs 4,39,864 crore (Rs 4,398.64 billion), accounting for 99.4 per cent of the total turnover in the derivatives markets. The BSE reported a 35.8 per cent rise in notional value to Rs 2,475 crore (Rs 24.75 billion).
The turnover in the debt market segment increased 13 per cent to Rs 19,42,367 crore (Rs 19,423.67 billion) in 2002-2003 from Rs 17,184,89 crore (Rs 17,184.89 billion) in the previous year. The wholesale debt market turnover increased 12.8 per cent to Rs 10,68,516 crore (Rs 10,685.16 billion) in 2002-03 from Rs 9,47,191 crore (Rs 9,471.91 billion) in 2001-02.
