A US-based manufacturer of microturbine energy systems would provide a biogas-to-energy demonstration project in West Bengal.

The project, expected to be on line by mid-2005, will be the first installation of Los Angeles-based Capstone Microturbine energy systems in India, the company said on Wednesday.

"This will introduce microturbines as a clean, climate-friendly, decentralised energy generation technology option for India," S.P. Gon Chaudhury, director of the West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency, said.

"This cooperative agreement... will serve as the first stepping stone to further deployments, particularly in converting waste gases in India into renewable energy," said Capstone CEO John Tucker.

The project, at a dairy farm in a village, will use all of the thermal energy and about one-third of the electricity produced by the microturbines. The remaining electricity will be distributed via a microgrid to a nearby village.
