Asian Paints is planning an international network of technology centres spread across Australia, Jamaica, Egypt, Dubai, Mauritius, Fiji and Singapore.

The centres will facilitate transfer of technology and new developments across Asian Paints' subsidiaries in 23 countries.

Ashwin Dani, vice chairman and managing director, said, "It is important for Asian Paints to leverage its technology resource from India as well as all across the group. In order to transfer technology across all subsidiaries and ensure that each unit has access to the necessary technology that it may require in the country of its presence, we have decided to develop this organisational structure."

Following the acquisition of the Singapore-based Berger International last year, Asian Paints's presence across the globe has strengthened further, making it among the top 10 paint companies in the world.

The network will comprise regional technology centres and product or lead technology centres across the globe, which are expected to be functional in the next three months.

Both the regional and product centres will be based in all the eight countries and will integrate the operations on these two levels.

"The R & D facility at Mumbai will be the main centre for outsourcing of technology to all the other nodes," Dani said.

While regional operations will be managed by the 'regional technology centres, product or lead technology centres will handle the sourcing and interchange of technology in specific product categories and technology platforms.

A regional centre will coordinate and source raw material as per the requirements of units in the region, besides providing technology support.

Each product technology centre will cater to the transactions of a specific product.

Mumbai is the centre for decorative tinting and colorants, the Singapore centre will cater to marine coatings and auto refinishes will be managed from Fiji.
