AMD bullish on local prospects

Leading micro processor manufacturer AMD said that it has identified India as one of its key market globally.

According to Ajay Marathe, vice president, manufacturing services division, AMD, "India is a key market for AMD in the region. We are bullish about the growth prospects here."

He said that China is a larger market for the company in the region, it expects India to emerge as one of the top market in the region.

The company is looking at expanding the scope of engagements it has with Indian software and technology development companies.

AMD has recently announced a multi year, multi million dollar tie up with HCL Technologies to outsource application, IT infrastructure management, maintenance and support of global IT applications.

"We have tied up with HCL Technologies. We are looking at how we as a company can expand our engagement with Indian companies.

"As part of AMD's overall strategy to build a more variable cost structure and enable greater operational and financial flexibility, we are building strategic relationships that allow our internal resources to focus on the issues and programs of highest priority and strategic importance for AMD," said Marathe.

On asked about the company's plans to set up a development and engineering facility by its own, he said, "We are looking at various possibilities in the Indian market. We are yet to finalise out stand on it."

According to Marathe, the company is looking at the various possibilities the Indian market can offer including using Indian talent for the company's global requirements.

AMD is also yet to take a decision on the company's stand on a manufacturing facility in India.

"Although we are looking at the business possibilities that India can offer, manufacturing is a distant possibility as of now. We are yet to make a decision on manufacturing," said Marathe.

AMD is also exploring the education market in the

country.

"We want to explore the education segment in India. It is a priority are for us. We want to work with Indian companies in this area," he said.

Marathe also said that the company wants to work with leading Indian research institutes to set up research institutes in the country. AMD currently has a research centre at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai.

"We want to replicate the experience we have with the Mumbai IIT with other research and training institutes," he said.
