Faculty of top academic institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and central universities say the Sixth Pay Commission's recommendations do not have a direct bearing on their compensation levels.

The new pay structure of assistant professors, associate professors and professors will be finalised by an internal committee of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), sources say.

Sources added the committee would take a couple of months to finalise the new pay structure.

"The pay hike recommended by the commission is welcome but we will have to wait for the final decision by the committee concerned under the MHRD," said Devi Singh, director, IIM-Lucknow.
