Fresh notifications and approvals for setting up Special Economic Zones are being put on hold till an Empowered Group of Ministers looking into the matter takes a final view, Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

A number of representations on various issues including land acquisition were placed before the EGOM which observed that further deliberations are needed before any new approvals for SEZ are given, Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath said in a written reply.

The EGOM decided that no new SEZ approvals be granted till a final view is taken by it, the minister said.

Miscellaneous approvals required for 63 already notified SEZs are considered by the government regularly, he said.
