Rail accidents decrease despite increased traffic

The Railway Budget for 2007-08 said on Monday the number of rail accidents had decreased despite substantial increase in volume of traffic.

Presenting the Budget, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav said production of improved crashworthy coaches would be increased and announced that the testing of Anti-Collision Device was in last stages.

Majority of Special Railway Safety Fund works to be completed by next month while the balance to be completed by March next year, he said.

General managers have been empowered to sanction subways costing upto Rs 50 lakhs (Rs 5 million) on unmanned level crossings for reducing accidents.

On the railway security, he said that the number of trained dogs would be increased in the existing dog squads.

Door frame and hand held metal detectors to detect explosives are being installed in many sensitive divisions and close circuit televisions, smart video cameras etc., will be installed in sensitive stations, the minister said.

Other measures include filling up of 8,000 vacancies in the RPF on all India basis and that recognition of Jagjivan Ram Railway Suraksha Bal Academy at Lucknow as Centralised Training Institute.
