BSNL to issue more forms in Srinagar

August 20, 2003 13:31 IST

With demand for mobile phone connections exceeding expectations in Srinagar, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd on Wednesday ordered another 10,000 application forms to cope with the rush even as a company official was suspended for unauthorised possession of forms.

"In view of the enormous demand, we have ordered another 10,000 forms to be printed to meet the demand," George Santosh Marshall, general manager (Kashmir), BSNL, told PTI in Srinagar.

He said the demand for the mobile phone service had far exceeded expectation as they had ordered only 20,000 application forms for the 13,000 connections to be given in Srinagar city.

"We have given out nearly 9,000 forms in the first two days itself. Nearly 17,000 forms were sold in Jammu on the first day itself," he said, adding the forms will be distributed till August 25.

He said a BSNL official has been suspended for possessing forms unauthorisedly.

To the criticism that BSNL was responsible for the long queues, as it had opened only two counters, he said this was just to avoid any malpractice in issuing forms.

"A person who has taken one form will be too tired to stand in the queue again," he said.

However, Marshall admitted that there were some reports of malpractices during the past two days.
