hat: The National Institute of Fashion Technology has designed a course on fashion to be conducted in schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education.
The Gujarat government plans to set up state-of-the art training institutes offering specialised courses in textiles.
Shankarsinh Vaghela, Union Textile Minister, says, "We have announced several incentives and subsidy schemes to develop the required infrastructure. NIFT has designed a course curriculum in fashion studies, which will be introduced by CBSE for Classes 10 and 12.
"Our ministry has also established the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Institute of Textile Management, a national level institute known for its textile-related activities," adds Vaghela.
SVPITM offers the following courses:
- Two-year post graduate course in textile management
- One-year post graduate diploma in knitting and apparel industry management.

The government of Gujarat has come up with a special incentive scheme for setting up apparel training institutes.
"We need trained and skilled manpower at the grassroots level to develop the apparel sector in the state," says Vaghela. "The state government has thus decided to set up training institutes in association with the central government and the private sector. The government has announced a subsidy of Rs 20 million to set up apparel training institutes."
"Four apparel training institutes have been proposed in the state -- two in Ahmedabad and two in Surat," says Chandan Chatterjee, general manager, technology and projects, Industrial Extension Bureau, a Gujarat government enterprise.
The Apparel Promotion Council plans to set up a training institute at the Surat Apparel Park.
Another Bangalore institute is in talks with the state government to set up training centres in Ahmedabad and Surat.
The district collectors will coordinate the training programmes. After training, the government will provide employment through the apparel parks.
The NIFT initiative has successfully addressed some problems of the clusters, and has opened new avenues for students through sustained development of craft cluster by integrating it with academic curriculum.
