Part I -- Finding the career that's right for you

Today, most young people are faced with a multitude of career choices. From IT to fashion design to interior decoration, the choice is endless. Though most of you have some idea of the options available to you, there are a lot of careers out there that you may not be aware of.


In a chat with readers Chandra Bali, a career guidance counsellor with Young Buzz, addressed queries about how to go about choosing a career, what a career in a particular field would entail, and a number of other issues.

For those of you who missed the chat, here is Part II of the transcript.

Singh asked, Hi, I recently finished my MBA with IT specialisation and am now working as IT project manager trainee at a start-up company. Please give me guidance, on how to go about getting a project management position in a big company like Infosys [Get Quote], Wipro [Get Quote], Satyam [Get Quote] etc.

Chandra Bali answers, You need to have good work experience, and then you can start applying in other companies. Based on your ability, you will get the desired position.


Pradeep asked, Is it good for me to do MBA from Symbiosis university?

Chandra Bali answers, Yes definitely. It is one of the top colleges for management in the country.


Rajiv asked, Hello Chandra, which university is better to do an MBA in finance through correspondence?

Chandra Bali answers, Universities like Annamalai, NMIMS, Madras and IGNOU offer MBA programmes through correspondence.


Sammy asked, Do I opt for an MBA or Mtech? I've done my graduation in BCom (P). I want to move on my career as a web designer only, but don't know what to study more?

Chandra Bali answers, You cannot do MTech after BCom. You can go for management, but if you want to pursue a career in web design, there are plenty of courses offered by various computer institutes in web designing.


Anand asked, Hello, I need your guidance. I am a graduate in IT and also a management graduate in marketing. Which way should I go? Which sector should I choose?

Chandra Bali answers, You should take up a job in your area of expertise. Both have great scope right now. Base your decision on your interests, and your performance in a particular field.


Deepakrajsharma_deepak asked, Hi I am an Arts graduate and don't want to study further. What are the options in front of me?

Chandra Bali answers, Graduation is the minimum requirement nowadays. Identify your area of interest and pursue a short-term or long-term course in it, so that you have better job prospects.

Swati asked, I have appeared for SSC. I want to do NDA/Aeronautical/Aerospace engg. What are the required steps?

Chandra Bali answers, 
You need to take up Physics, Chemistry and Math after the tenth standard.Then you have to appear for various engineering entrance examinations, or the UPSC exams for the NDA. Depending on your score, you will get admission.

Prashanth asked, I have secured 70.2% marks in CBSE 2007 12th exam, with 80% in maths (PCM 68%). I wanted to go for engineering, but have not qualified in any of the engineering entrance tests. Can you suggest some alternate option?

Chandra Bali answers, You can go for BSc IT/ BCA/ BSc Computer Science, and then go for MCA or Management in Systems/ IT.


Jaya asked, Hi Chandra, I have done my interior designing, then what option I have further?

Chandra Bali answers, You can start working as an interior decorator, set designer, exhibition designer, window display designer or visual merchandiser.


Vijayan asked, I am a student of 11th pass and I would like to have your guidance for after I complete my 12th. I am an average student but my maths is weak.

Chandra Bali answers, The best thing would be to go for an aptitude, interest and personality test. This will give you a better understanding of yourself and what career you should pursue.


Ramesh asked, In today's scenario, is it advisable to go for a research career or an MBA. I am talking in perspective of the career growth.

Chandra Bali answers, In today's scenario, MBA has become a norm. Opportunities are better if you have a management degree.


Kish asked, Hello Chandra, which are the courses available for export/imports after 12th and what is their scope?

Chandra Bali answers, Complete your graduation first, and then go for a post graduate diploma in import and export management. You can also go for international business management. The scope in this field is immense.


Dipanwita asked, I am a student of class XII with Eco, Maths, Accounts, Business Maths and English. Should I pursue Economics in college or BBA? I want to do MBA in future.

Chandra Bali answers, MBA can be pursued after graduation in any field. Depending on what MBA specialisation you want to pursue, you have to decide your course.
