Oberoi Udaivilas is the world's best hotel

The Oberoi Udaivilas, the luxury hotel in Udaipur has been rated the best hotel in the world. This is the first time an Indian property has grabbed the No 1 spot. The Udaipur property also tops the lists for best small hotel and best hotel in Asia.

World's Best Hotels

Three out of the top five hotels in Asia are in India. The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra [Images] has been ranked the third best hotel in Asia and 10th best in the world while the The Oberoi Rajvilas, Jaipur is at No 4 in Asia and at No 11 in the world.

Thai hotels account for more than one in four of the properties selected as Asia's best. And while classics still reign -- The Oriental Bangkok debuted at No 1 in 1996 and comes in at No 2 this year -- the popularity of hotels such as Amanpuri, Banyan Tree, and Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai are proof that T+L readers now eagerly venture beyond Thailand's capital to beach resorts on Phuket and jungle retreats in the north.
