You want to work hard and make a career for yourself.

But sometimes your vision gets cloudy and you wonder whether the career path you are treading is the right one.

JAM editor and Get Ahead columnist Rashmi Bansal chatted with Get Ahead readers on April 27 and offers some advice:

"One way to approach the problem is to 'identify your passion'. The other is identify all the things you definitely don't want to be and make sure no one forces you into them."

Rashmi is a graduate from IIM-Ahmedabad and founder-editor of the popular youth magazine JAM. She writes on youth, trends, B-schools and entrepreneurship. She's an avid blogger and you can check out what she writes at Youthcurry.

For those who missed the chat, here is the transcript:

Part I: Why you must know English

Barisan asked, hirashmi, i am a BCA JOINING IBM-DAKSH, Gurgaon AS Specialist-technical support. do u have any better prospects for me ???

Rashmi Bansal answers,
Barisan, prospects will come. Enjoy what you are doing right now and try to figure out what you really enjoy doing. The right decisions always flow from that!

Deepika asked, Hey Rashmi, i just want to know your view of whether a college necessarily needs to be accredited to an education authority? I am applying for this college Northpoint Centre of Learning affiliated with Lintas and it is only 2 years old and not recognised formally by any authority as such. Whats ur view? Mostly ppl from here get back into any of the arms of Lintas itself.

Rashmi Bansal answers, Northpoint is a good college, supported by Lintas. If you want to get into advertising, I would recommend it, although MICA would be my first choice.

amit13 asked, hi....i am a big fan of yours and read yr column with BW regularly.....hw r u doing? also, do you plan to write any books?

Rashmi Bansal answers, Amit - thanks. Yes, I do hope to write a book someday :)

Samir asked, There should be a reservation for bright kids from jhugi jhopdis. Don't ask me how it will work. We can all think about it, if need be. Get some merit even in the quotas.

Rashmi Bansal answers, Have you heard of
Akanksha? They help slum children get a better education and many young people work with them as volunteers. Contact them if you feel strongly on this.

Kishlaysharma asked, Hi Rashmi! I am sitting in China in my office,i was just waiting for you to arrive..I read your articles regarding reservations, very nice homework and data collection..I wonder if a person like you can do it why can not our esteemed parliamenterians do it to atleast give a firm base for our education and employement policies??

Rashmi Bansal answers,
Hi Kishlay. Politicians unfortunately want the easy way out. My policy, which takes 10 years to fructify, is not of use to them because by then they may be out of power! Reservations impact today, improvement in primary schools will create impact in 10 years. So you can guess which policy they will try to implement.

Abhishek asked, Hello Ms Rashmi....I have been a regular visitor to yor website n have even responsed to tat questionaaire related to choicers and preferences, i just wanna ask you wen the ppl of iim's are goin out into such lucrative carrer options , wat made u enter into this new venture with no gurantee of sucess ?

Rashmi Bansal answers,
Well, each of us may define success differently. To earn a lot of money doing something you don't enjoy doing -- like being a banker -- was not 'success' to me!

Biplob asked, Asking driver to change channels....I thought you were middle class like a large majority of people who waste their time online. Anyways, there was a ticker in some news channel that you need more than 50% in graduation to get in IIM, if that's true then what should be the course of action for idiots like us.

Rashmi Bansal answers, Honestly, I haven't looked into it, but I think the 50 percent rule has always been there. Fifty percent at graduation is not asking for too much, I think. Yes, I do have a driver. I live in New Bombay. So that's become not a luxury but a necessity. As you grow older, you'll realise time has almost as much value as money. If keeping a driver saves time and makes me more productive, it's actually well worth it. And 'middle class' is more about values and ethics than about whether you have a driver or not, IMHO.

amit13 asked, rashmi....i hvnt read anythign from u abt RDB and whether its reflective of youth workforce today and if u see any patterns that r likely to impact next 10-20 years for indian economy....esp for sectors like BPO where youth are driving the growth.

Rashmi Bansal answers, I had written about RDB on my blog. As for its impact, I do think the movie sensed that young people are not just fun loving, that they can be ignited to 'do something'. BPOs and all companies in fact will have to work hard to ignite the passion in their young workers. To make them feel their jobs matter, that they're not there just for the pay cheque.

ashraf asked, i have my niece, she will be giving her SSC examination next year. I want her to be in engineering stream. I have learnt there are quota systems in diploma in engg for students from technical schools. is it correct.

Rashmi Bansal answers, I hope your niece wants to be in the engineering stream as well! There are quotas in state level engineering colleges, differing from state to state.

ajithat asked, Hi Rashmi, Just dropped by to say Hi.. I'm a regular silent reader of Youth Curry.

Rashmi Bansal answers, hi Ajit - thanks. Why silent :)

shikha asked, hi mam! tell me d bst way 2 attract readers.

Rashmi Bansal answers, Write from you heart. Write on what you feel strongly. And check your spellings and grammar so it does not read like one huge SMS message!

Jumbo asked, Your comments on IIPM created quite an stirr in blog world. How is it going now? I do appreciate your comments on free market economies, reservation etc. Do you see RDB happening for the cause of reservation in IIT/IIM or in Pvt Companies?

Rashmi Bansal answers, Thanks Jumbo. I don't think quotas in private sector will go through. All of industry is opposed to it. Even Congress is divided on this as per today's newspaper report.

vinay asked, I am a doctor and want to do MBAfrom where it will be better in correspondence.

Rashmi Bansal answers, Doctors are doing MBA now. Correspondence would be okay if you are doing MBA for the sake of knowledge. For a job switch, a full-time MBA would be necessary.

NN asked, hi Rashmi, read your columns and blog.love them!My problem is that I am intersted in quite a few things, and I cannot decide what I want to follow as my career. Also,I want to know your take on 'sciences r brainier'.do reply.

Rashmi Bansal answers,
Hi NN, thanks! Well I don't know how old you are. I'd say, until 21-22, it's perfectly okay to be confused but then many parents might beat me up for saying it :)

One way to approach the problem is to 'identify your passion'. The other is identify all the things you definitely don't want to be and make sure no one forces you into them. No, I don't think science students are brainier!

spi.sanju asked, madam....which is great either MBA or IAS.

Rashmi Bansal answers, My dear, nothng is great per se -- it depends on what kind of career turns you on and what you make of it.

Hello asked, Hi Rashmi. I like reading your articles. My question is what the job prospects in India for those with foreign degrees like MS, PhD, etc. especially from Europe? Will the proficiency of one european language like German or French or Spanish help as additional qualifications in companies (Chemical, pharmaceutical, etc)?

Rashmi Bansal answers,
I don't know, MS or PhD in which field. If from a good university, definitely there should be good prospects. More than German or Spanish, I think Chinese is the language of the future.

Rashmi Bansal says, Everyone, it'e been amazing chatting with you. There are many questions I have not been able to answer... but hope to link up with you another time. Have a great day! regards, Rashmi
