Plan of action, post-CAT

November 23, 2005

Post the excitement of giving the Common Admission Test 2005, you need to start planning for the road ahead.

Vinod Soni and Rajesh Pandita of ManyaCAT, in a chat with CAT aspirants on November 21 offered this advice: Start preparing for your Group Discussion and Personal Interview. Brush up on your general knowledge; it will prepare you for the GD. PI would require a lot of introspection.

Vinod is an architect and has studied management at MDI. He worked with ICI Paints and was stationed in China for three years. His background in design and an affinity for academics led him to join The Princeton Review, where he looks after content design and study methodology.

  • Will you get a call from the IIMs?
  • Rajesh is the director, ManyaCAT. He has worked with multinationals like NIIT and Informatics. Before joining the Manya Group, he worked with FIIT JEE. At ManyaCAT he prepares candidates for various B-school entrance examinations, including CAT, XAT, SNAP, etc.

    Here is the transcript:

Part II: Are sectional cut-offs a problem?

vivekanand: Sir,This is the second time I'm asking you. Please give me a reply,My expected scores are 11 in DI, 10 in QA and 20-22 in VA.Where should I expect interview and GD calls from??

Rajesh: At least not from the IIMs. It could be Nirma, LBISM and similar kind of institutes.

RV1: Dear Sir, I'm a graduate with BSc statistics and have 5 yrs of exp as software Eng. I'm planning to go for MBA. Please suggest me in this regard. Also my English is very poor where as my QA, DI and Reasoning are really good. So for any of the Business Schools, is there any constraint that we've to qualify in all the sections? Please let me kow sir.

Rajesh: I think in your case you have to map your career growth. You can go for part-time or executive MBA.

sony: Inspite of good prep. for eng. I goofed up?

Rajesh: The thing which matters is how you click in those two hours.

sandeep: such stupid questions in Quants and DI...i don't understand what IIMs want to check on the basis of these easy questions...and how can you people call these two sections tough??

Rajesh: If they are easy, they are easy for everybody so they will pick up the intelligent ones from the fools.

koushik: Sir am a visually challenged guy, am expecting these scores in cat 2005 QA6.33, DI21, VA 19, what are my chances to get calls from IIMs.

    Rajesh:  Good chances.

Rajesh: Seems difficult but keep preparing for others.

    sony
: WHAT is the structure of NMAT exam?

Rajesh: Apart from the general trend of VA, DI, RC and QA, they have also introduced GA/ BA and Q&A on global and social awareness.

    ashisham
: Sir i am quite confident of a IIM call, what should i do prepare for GD/PI or conceterate on XAT and snap

Vinod: Prepare for both. They are complementary. Brush up on your general knowledge; it will prepare you for the GD as well. PI would require a lot of introspection.

    Mitesh
: I HAVE WORK EXP OF MORE THAN 1 YR IN IT.MY SCORE COMES TO AROUND 30-35.SHOULD I EXPECT SOME CALLS FM ONE OF SPJAIN,NITIE,MDI,IMT,TAPMI???PLEAS RESPOND!!!I M IN A FIX.

Vinod: Looks difficult. But keep your hopes up and prepare for other exams. Best of luck.

    Santosh
: Quant10 DI 15 and VA 25 with exp of 30 months what are my chances for IIM.

Vinod: Your score in Quant is less. But still, keep your fingers crossed for one call from IIM/ MDI/ SP Jain.

    anonymous
: Hi Vomiod and Rajesh. I have checked my answers with the ones provided by CL. The scores come to 15 in QA 21 in VA/RC and 17.67 in DI. I have passed out from IIT in 2004 and have been working in IT industry. Can i expect a few calls? N can u gimme a rough number?

Vinod: You can surely expect a call from at least one IIM and many from other top 10 institutes. But do cross check with other centres also like IMS, T.I.M.E for your final score.

    Mitesh
: WHAT CAN BE THE INDIVIDUAL CUTOFFS??ARE THEY SOMEWAT LOWER FOR WORK-EX GUYS???

Rajesh: Depends on institute to institute.

Vinod: Sandip, it is a good option for advertising.

    kumar
: what makes your company better than competition.

Rajesh: This is not a forum where we can discuss these questions but we can discuss this if you visit one of our centres or our web site.

Vinod: Amit, was your experience in technical field? Depending on that you could keep some hope for SP Jain. But still, 40 is a low score.

    Santosh
: My freind has score of Quant 8 Di 12 and VA 22. what will be his percentile and chences of call from IIM and non IIM.

Rajesh: Looks tough, but keep your fingers crossed.

Vinod: Depends on what you want to do/ your skill sets/ your educational and work background.

    naveen

: Hello Rajesh,i think i shall get a cool score, I have 6 yrs of experience in construction industry. I want to switch to banking industry now. Pl tell me MBA in finance can do it for me or not.

Vinod: It is very good idea. Chesterton Meghraj/ CB Richard Ellis love such kind of people.

    anand
: What is the kind of general reading that i need to develop in order to improve my vocabulary, reading speed.

Rajesh: Read the leading English newspapers daily and news and business magazines.

    vivekgupta
: i was scoring on average 95percentile in mocks.but score 20 in this CAT. im completely shocked. what shuld i do??????

Rajesh: You have to perform in those two hours on D-day.

    gaurav_iitb
: My score goes as DI - 17.66; Quant - 13.33; VA - 22 (Total: 53). Plz tell can I get expect call from 2 - 3 IIM's at this score? (Work ex - arnd 8 months. DId grad and post grad from IITB.)

Rajesh: Yes you can get a call from multiple IIMs. Start preparing for GD/ PI.

    SR
: sir this is the 4th time im asking a question sir could you tell me what score is required to get a call from NIRMA.

Rajesh: For NIRMA, 42 to 45 is safe.

    shaily
: also i have engg background 3 yr exp, total score 29 what abt percentile.

Rajesh: It's a bell curve. It's hard to predict.

    chethan
: Hi i am getting 18 in quant : 15 in DI but -2 in VA !!!! Is there any institute which gives less preference to vA and consider cAT score.

Rajesh: The sectional cut-off would be a problem for you.

    cooltarun
: hi sir. I am getting 17 in Quant, 15 in DI and 25 in Verbal. Can I expect any calls?

Vinod: Multiple IIMs. Start preparing for your GD/ PI.

chasu: hi vinod i get scores of qa-17;di-19,va-14..as i may not clear cut off in verbal.what other options shud i go for i mpassed out from NIT this year presently working in a software industry..do suggest me.

Vinod: Other than top 10 schools, rest of the schools are not so strict on sectional cut-offs. So you can still expect calls from some good schools.

    goutam
: SIR, can i expect a call from TAPMI with a score in the range of 29-31.

Vinod: TAPMI would be tough at this score. But keep your hopes high and prepare for further coming tests.

    sony
: MAY I EXPECT ATLEAST ONE ANS. TO ANY OF MY QUESTIONS?

Rajesh: I think we have answered a question similar to yours.

    Prateek
: I m getting 10 in DI,15 in QA and 21 in VA with a total score of 46.How many calls can I expect?

Rajesh: You can expect calls from FORE, IMI, Nirma, KJ Somaiya, LBSIM, and similar rung colleges.

    blahblah

    Vinod: Please check earlier answers.

    aditya
: my net score is coming up to be 42. what are the chances to get call fronm MDI.

Rajesh: Improbable. But Nirma, LBSIM could be possible.

    sony
: Any suggestions or advice for people scoring less than their expectation?

Vinod: Prepare for other exams. Also good students in even ordinary institutes can get good starting placement. If you still get a call from top 50 and have good work experience, don't waste your year.

    Anurag
: my scroe is VA 27.66 DI 9.33 and Quant 6.66 is IIM/MDI call possible.

    maveerick
: I am expectin 33-36 what shld i expect with this score.

Rajesh: Not calls from the top 30 to 50.

Rajesh: All institutes have their own parameters for evaluating cut-offs. There is bound to be some difference.

    dir
