How to get that dazzling smile!

March 30, 2005

N new resin-based snap-on tooth cover can provide the perfect smile without people have to undergo teeth replacement.

SmileSnap-on teeth, with celebrity-inspired choppers, are fast becoming a popular way to get that coveted smile without waiting out braces or dropping thousands on caps, say some dentists.

At present, this is available in the US.

"It gives patients an opportunity to see how one can enhance one's smile at very little cost," said Larry Addleson, president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

The plastic teeth slide over a patient's own like a glove and snap into place. The wearer simply puts them in or removes them with a gentle push or tug.

New York dentist Jeff Golub-Evans offers his patients a variety of celebrity-inspired looks such as 'Halle' or 'Gwyneth' for women, and 'Denzel' or 'George' for men.

"A good smile is now a fashion accessory," he says.

"The whole idea is to give people the confidence to go out and smile," says Marc Liechtung, a Manhattan-based dentist who offers this innovation to his customers.

Dental experts say the prosthetics could last for years with limited usage and careful cleaning.

A more natural way to enhance one's one smile is, of course, to have good teeth. But for that one must inculcate good oral hygiene habits.

Dr Danish Barmare (BDS) offers simple yet effective tips for getting an impressive set of pearly whites.

~ Pay a visit to your dentist every six to eight months to get your teeth checked for cavities, etc.

~ Brush your teeth daily, once in the morning and at night after your last meal.

~ Make sure you change your brush every three to six months.

~ It does not matter whether you use gel or a cream-based toothpaste; both are equally effective. Do make sure your toothpaste has Fluoride (check the ingredients listed on the packaging). Toothpastes like Colgate Total, Pepsodent 2-in-1 and Close-Up are good.

~ Brush up on your brushing skills; good technique helps control the growth of plaque and promotes gum care. The Modified Stillman Technique is ideal. Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle to the gum. Place it horizontally on your teeth and use a to-and-fro sideways movement. Begin at the gums and move towards the edge of the tooth.

~ The market is flooded with tooth brushes that offer soft, medium and hard bristles. Ideally, your toothbrush should be a mix of soft outer bristles with rounded edges and harder inner bristles. The brand Oral B Exceed is a little steep at Rs 75-80, but is a good bet.

~ Motorised, battery-operated brushes are also effective, they cost approximately Rs 350. Change the head (which has the bristles) every three to six months and, of course, the battery. This apparatus can have multiple users, though each member of the household must have an individual head!

~ When you consume acidic food like aerated drinks, spicy/ oily food or chocolates, wait for at least 10 minutes before brushing; the saliva needs time to neutralise the acidic effect in the mouth.

~ After brushing, use a mouthwash. This helps to control the formation of plaque, a film of mucus and bacteria which forms on the tooth surface.

~ Post lunch, gargle with water.

~ Flossing your teeth every night after brushing is a good activity. Do get your dentist to demonstrate the right method for flossing or you could end up hurting your teeth and gums.
