Kevin Pietersen promoted himself as opener and managed to shrug off some patchy form.

He first smashed Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a boundary through covers, and then got an outside edge off the next ball for second boundary from the over.

But he came into his own against leg-spinner Karn Sharma, smashing him for a six and boundary in the next over.

Mayank Agarwal, too, wasn’t far behind as he announced his arrival with a superb boundary off Dale Steyn.

Moises Henriques came in for some rough treatment in his opening over as Pietersen took a liking to his pace, dispatching a friendly half-volley into the stands and one straight past the bowler.

Dinesh Karthik and Laxmi Shukla combined well for Delhi and the duo put on a crucial 55-runs stand for the fourth wicket.

However, at the start of 14th over, the umpires decided to call for the pitch covers anticipating rain, which came shortly afterwards, resulting in loss of play for an hour.

When play resumed, Karthik took on the bowling, looking to up the ante.

He hit Karn Sharma for a six and boundary as it looked as if Delhi would put up a competitive score.

However, Henriques dismissed Karthik and Shukla in the same over to peg Delhi back.

JP Duminy couldn’t deliver as he was castled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
