High-profile fitness trainer Allistair McCaw of South Africa is likely to throw his hat into the ring as the Board of Control for Cricket in India continues its search for a replacement for Adrian le Roux, who joined the South African national team earlier this month.

McCaw has been asked by South African provincial team Gautengs trainer Jeff Lunsky to apply for the post. The move is believed to have been prompted by Indian team physio Andrew Leipus.

However, it could be quite some time before McCaw makes a decision.

If McCaw comes into the picture, Sourav Ganguly and his men could be put under the regimen of a fitness guru with a bigger profile than Le Roux. Among his many other achievements, McCaw has also acted as the personal trainer of present South Africa captain Graeme Smith.

McCaw earned praise for his work with the Dutch team during the World Cup in South Africa, after experts rated Holland as the fittest fielding side in the competition. He has also worked with PGA golfers, elite track athletes and world-class sportsmen in different disciplines and been a source for advising and implementing the fitness of ATP professionals and premier league hockey players.

As a sportsman too, he has quite a few achievements. He was one of the top 10 junior tennis players in South Africa and twice voted the fittest South African, in 2000 and 2001. He won a silver medal in the world dualathon championship (running and cycling) in his age group in Atlanta last year.

He is the third trainer whose name has cropped up as the possible replacement for Le Roux.

East Bengal football club trainer Kevin Jackson and former Sri Lankan trainer Alex Kountouri have also been mentioned as possible candidates.

The decision on the appointment of the trainer could be taken as early as the working committee meeting of the Board, in Delhi on July 2 and 3.
