India's second-best total in a day vs Pakistan

Statistical highlights after the first day's play in the second Test between India and Pakistan at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday.

# India's total of 352 for three off 84.3 overs on the first day of the Kolkata Test is their second best in a day's play against Pakistan, next only to their 356 for two on the first day of the Multan Test, when Virender Sehwag scored an unbeaten 228.

# India's aforesaid total is their ninth highest in a day's play.

# Just for the record, India's highest total in a day's play is 372 for 7 on the first day against South Africa at Bloemfontein in 2001-02. At the Eden Gardens, India's highest in a day's play is 369 for three against Australia in 1997-98.

# Wasim Jaffer, playing in his 24th Test, posted his fifth Test century (192 not out off 255 balls) -- his first against Pakistan. His innings is now his second highest, next only to his 212 off 399 balls against West Indies at St John's in 2006.

# Jaffer's innings is his highest score in India, obliterating his 100 against England at Nagpur in 2005-06.

# Jaffer is now the fourth Indian to record a Test hundred against Pakistan at the Eden Gardens, joining Deepak Shodhan (110) in 1952-53, Mohammad Azharuddin (141) in 1986-87 and Rahul Dravid (135 & 110) in 2004-05.

# Jaffer's knock is now the third highest individual innings at Eden Gardens, next only to VVS Laxman's 281 for India against Australia in 2000-01 and Rohan Kanhai's 256 for West Indies against India in 1958-59.

# Jaffer scored 192 on the first day, which is the third highest by an Indian in a day's play. Sehwag had scored an unbeaten 228 (during his innings of 309) on the first day of the Multan Test against Pakistan in March/April 2004. Sehwag made 195 on the first day of the Melbourne Test against Australia in December 2003.

# Dravid posted his first fifty in six innings against Pakistan -- his third overall against Pakistan.

# Dravid's 50 off 118 balls is his 49th fifty in Test cricket -- his third at Eden Gardens.

# Dravid has now registered 3 fifty-plus innings at the Eden Gardens. In his previous Test against Pakistan at this venue in 2004-05, he had made a century in each innings -- 110 & 135.

# Dravid has taken his run-aggregate at Eden Gardens to 835 in 14 innings (8 Tests) at an average of 64.23, including three centuries and three fifties, overtaking VVS Laxman's aggregate of 786 (ave.71.45) in 12 innings before today's game.

# Dravid now needs 26 runs to surpass Mohammad Azharuddin's all-time record at this venue - 860 (ave.107.50) in nine innings (7 Tests), including 5 centuries + 2 fifties.

# The 136-run stand for the second wicket between Jaffer and Dravid is India's best against Pakistan in India, eclipsing the 107 between Nari Contractor and Rusi Surti at Ferozshah Kotla, Delhi in 1960-61.

# Dravid has extended his world record for having been associated in 68 century stands in Test cricket.

# Sachin Tendulkar registered his third fifty-plus at Eden Gardens. In his previous Test against Pakistan at this venue in March 2005, he had made 52 & 52.

# Sachin's seventh fifty against Pakistan is his 47th in Test cricket.

# Tendulkar, when on 25, completed his 1000 runs against Pakistan in 18 Tests -- 1057 at an average of 42.28. He became the seventh Indian after Sunil Gavaskar (2089), Dilip Vengsarkar (1284), Virender Sehwag (1276), Rahul Dravid (1167), Mohinder Amarnath (1080) and Kapil Dev (1054) to accomplish the feat.

# Tendulkar, when on 26, completed his 5000 runs at home -- 5056 (ave.55.56) in 62 Tests to become the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar and the eighth in Test Cricket to aggregate 5000 runs or more at home. Brian Lara (WI) -- 6217 in 65 Tests heads the table, followed by England's Graham Gooch (5917 in 74), Australia's Allan Border (5743 in 86), Steve Waugh (5710 in 89) and Ricky Ponting (5623 in 64), Sunil

Gavaskar (5067 in 65) and South Africa's Jacques Kallis (5018 in 62).

# The 175-run stand between Jaffer and Tendulkar is India's best for the third wicket at Eden Gardens, eclipsing the 144 between Pankaj Roy and Vijay Manjrekar against New Zealand in 1955-56.

# India's previous best against Pakistan for the third wicket at Eden Gardens was 122 between Dravid and Tendulkar in March 2005.
