IPL PHOTOS: Gayle hits fastest T20 hundred

Pune Warriors India won the toss and invited Royal Challengers Bangalore to bat first in their Indian Premier League match at the Chinnaswamy stadium on Tuesday.

Rain played spoilsport early on and stopped the play for almost 30 minutes. But after that a 'Gayle storm' hit the ground as the West Indies batting ace went on the rampage.

He hit the fastest century in Twenty20 cricket to help RCB crush Pune by a mammoth margin of 130 runs.

Mitchell Marsh bowled the fifth over and it was one of the most expensive ones. 28 runs came off it. Chris Gayle hit four sixes and a boundary.

The home team crossed the 50-run mark in that over and Gayle got to his fifty.

Gayle's fastest ever T20 century came off just 30 balls.

He got it in style, hitting Ashok Dinda for a six.

The record was held by Andrew Symonds, who got it off 34 balls for Kent vs Middlesex, in 2004.

Royal Challengers Bangalore were 124 without loss after nine overs.

Luke Wright gave Pune something to cheer about, having Tillakaratne Dilshan (33) was caught by Ali Murtaza at cover.

Gayle reached 150 off 53 balls.

RCB were 196 for one after 15 overs.

Pune Warriors got off to a horror start with the bat. Robin Uthappa was dismissed in the first over of the innings, caught by RP Singh off Murali Kartik for a duck.

Aaron Finch (18), Luke Wright (7) and Yuvraj Singh (16) also perished cheaply as Pune were left reeling at 42 for four in the sixth over.

Steven Smith top-scored for Pune Warriors with a quickfire innings of 41 from 31 balls, hitting six fours, to save the blushes for the visitors.

Smith and Mitchell Marsh (25) put on a 58-run stand for the fifth wicket to steady the innings after the early dismissals.

Pune kept lost wickets at regular intervals as Bangalore dominated with the ball too.

Smith was dismissed by pacer Ravi Rampaul, while Marsh was bowled by Vinay Kumar as Pune kept slipping.

Gayle's heroics too much for Pune

Gayle was handed the ball for the last over of the innings, with Pune needing 136 runs.

The West Indian claimed two wickets in the over to provide more joy to his fans.

Ali Murtaza was stumped by wicketkeeper Arun Karthik for five before Ishwar Pandey was bowled for a duck.

Pune finished on 139 for nine in their 20 overs and lost by a huge margin of 130 runs.

Gayle hammered 175 from 66 balls and then took two for five in the only over he bowled.
