'Playing the Aussies is the greatest catalyst'

The greatest thing that a coach can aspire for is to be at the helm of a confident team. And Gary Kirsten is enjoying that special moment now.

He is coaching an Indian team that actually believes that it can upset the applecart of the Australians.

"We have a very determined group of cricketers, a motivated bunch who are desperate to win against the Australians," said the South African. And what makes the bunch motivated?

"We spent a lot of time together. The boys realised that they would be playing the No 1 team in the world and to get the better of them they have to play as a team, and not as individuals," explained Kirsten.

"The greatest catalyst behind this motivation is the fact that we are playing against the best side."

The South African seemed quite content with India's performance in the opening Test at Bangalore.

"I'm obviously happy with the fact that every player got some time out at the crease," he said.

However, he refrained from saying anything about the team composition for the Mohali Test.

"We're looking at different options. We will have a look at the wicket tomorrow and then make a decision," said Kirsten.

He did, however, open up on captain Anil Kumble.

"Anil is in a bit of pain but we hope he'll be alright," he said. "However, regardless of the fact he is fit or not he would definitely like to turn up for his country and put in a determined effort," he added.

The coach had words of praise for speedster Zaheer Khan.

"Zaheer has tremendous belief and he is also very intelligent. And these two factors come from experience, something that has made him a highly skilful bowler," he explained.

Kirsten looked a bit apprehensive about the nature of the wicket though.

"It certainly doesn't look like a seaming wicket to me. There's definitely no moisture," he said, adding, "We have definitely got some interesting decisions to make."
