Australian pacer Shaun Tait's participation in the upcoming Twenty20 cricket World Cup is in doubt as he undergoes an arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday.

"Shaun is undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday to relieve soft-tissue impingement," Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said in a statement on Monday.

The operation rules him out of action until mid-August.

"We are hoping he will be back bowling by mid-August. This would leave him with a 50-50 chance of playing in the ICC Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa," he added.

Tait, who was drafted into Australia's World Cup squad only after an injury to strike bowler Brett Lee, emerged as one of the stars of the tournament taking 23 wickets at an average of 20.30.

The 24-year-old slinger has been having trouble in his bowling arm due to his unusual action.
