Impressive start by Uttar Pradesh

Piyush Chawala (82) and TM Srivastava (81) helped Uttar Pradesh score an impressive 293 for six wickets on the first day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Super League - Group B match against Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Electing to bat first, the the visitors lost their opener RP Srivastava in the first over itself, but Chawla and Srivastava played a steady knock to get them out of trouble.

Chawla's 82 included 10 fours and a six while Srivastava hit nine boundaries. Captain Mohammed Kaif scored 37 while Suresh Raina contributed 35.

For the hosts, Vishal Sharma, who made his first class debut, claimed two wickets for 78 runs. S M Shoaib also picked up a couple of wickets while MP Arjun and PP Ojha claimed a scalp each.

Amir Khan (44) and P Kumar (7) were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the day.
