Tsunami match gets tax exemption

Kolkata will host the second tsunami charity match between the Rest of World XI and an Asian XI on February 13, Asian Cricket Council president Jagmohan Dalmiya announced in Kolkata on Thursday.

The decision was taken after the government accorded tax exemption to the fundraiser, a pre-condition for hosting the match, he said.

Asked why a decision on the venue took so much time, Dalmiya said the Finance Ministry wanted a charitable trust to be put into place.

"The Finance Ministry wanted a trust to be formed for the purpose of organising the match. Accordingly, it has been decided to form a charitable trust only for the purpose of organising the match."

The other details like telecast of the match, composition of the teams and whether the match would be a day affair or a day-night one, would be decided later, he said.

He, however, said the tie at Eden Gardens was likely to be a day-night encounter.

The first of the tsunami benefit cricket matches was held in Melbourne on January 10.
