Stats highlights: India vs England, 3rd ODI

Rajneesh Gupta | September 06, 2004 17:13 IST

  • Dinesh Karthik made his international debut for India. He became the 156th player to represent India in the shorter version of the game. He also became the 19th player to keep wickets for India.
  • At 19 years 96 days, Karthik became the second youngest wicketkeeper to make an ODI appearance for India. Only Parthiv Patel, aged 17 years 301 days, made his ODI debut at a younger age for India. Overall, Karthik became the joint tenth youngest player (along with Narendra Hirwani) to play for India.
  • V V S Laxman opened the innings for India for the fifth time in his career.  He has, however, aggregated only 54 runs in the five innings at an average of 10.80 and strike rate of 38.84.
  • Sourav Ganguly (90 off 119 balls) was dismissed in the nineties for the fourth time in his career. His other scores in the 90s are: 96 (off 136 balls) vs Pakistan at Toronto on 21-09-1997, 90 (off 128 balls) also vs Pakistan at Sharjah on 14-12-1997 and 97 (off 142 balls) against South Africa at Hove on 15-05-1999.
  • This was also Ganguly's highest score against England in England, surpassing his previous highest of 60 off 43 balls at Lord's on 13-07-2002.
  • Ganguly, at the end of this match, took his career aggregate as captain to 4,759 from 131 matches. He thus moved into the third place among the highest run-scoring captains' list, displacing New Zealander Stephen Fleming who has aggregated 4,672 runs in 164 matches. Now only Sri Lanka's Arjuna Ranatunga (5,606 runs in 193 matches) and former teammate and skipper Mohammad Azharuddin (5,239 in 174) are ahead of Ganguly. Incidentally, Ganguly's batting average of 41.03 is the second highest among all players who have captained their sides in at least 50 matches after Australia's Ricky Ponting (43.28).
  • Virender Sehwag, batting at number four position for the first time in his career, was caught and bowled for the fifth time in his career. Incidentally, this was his third such dismissal against England in 15 innings.
  • Darren Gough became the first English bowler and the 19th in ODIs to take 200 wickets when he dismissed Harbhajan Singh for a first ball duck. He was playing his 134th match.
  • India's 204 is their lowest completed innings total against England at Lord's. Later, England also recorded their lowest completed innings total against India at Lord's by getting bundled out for 181.
  • Steve Harmison (4 for 22) ended up with career-best bowling figures, surpassing his 3 for 31 against the West Indies at Leeds on 01-07-2004.
  • Michael Vaughan's 74 was his second highest score in LOIs - his highest is 83 against South Africa at Birmingham on 08-07-2003.
  • The seventh-wicket partnership of 92 runs between Michael Vaughan and Ashley Giles is England's highest for this wicket-position against India and second highest against all countries after the 110 run-partnership between Paul Collingwood and Craig White against Sri Lanka at Perth on 20-12-2002. The previous best seventh wicket partnership for England against India was 86 (unbroken) between Mike Gatting and Paul Downton at Pune on 05-12-1984.
  • The above partnership is also the highest for seventh wicket for any side in 38 matches played at Lord's, obliterating 77-run partnership between Tony Greig and Alan Knott for England against West Indies on 28-08-1976 and between Marcus Trescothick and Chris Read (unbroken) for England against Pakistan on 22-06-2003.
  • Giles (39 off 62 balls) made his highest score in ODIs, beating the 21 not out against New Zealand at Dunedin on 26-02-2002 and 21 against Sri Lanka at Dambulla on 18-11-2003.
  • Harbhajan's figures of 3-28 are the best by an Indian spinner against England on English soil bettering fellow teammate Yuvraj's 3 for 39 on this same ground on 29-06-2002.
  • England lost a match for the first time batting second under Vaughan's captaincy.
  • Sourav Ganguly received his 29th Man of the Match award. However, this was only his second award against England.
  • At the end of the series, England's overall ODI record: played 398, won 196, lost 188, tied 2 and abandoned 12.
