Mumbai push for outright win

March 29, 2004 21:03 IST

Amol Muzumdar top-scored with 146 as defending champions Mumbai pushed for an outright victory over Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy final in Chennai on Monday.

Muzumdar, the third batsman to hit a hundred in the innings after openers Wasim Jaffer (133) and Vinayak Mane (106), helped Mumbai amass 613 in reply to Tamil Nadu's first innings 294.

Tamil Nadu were 163 for three in their second innings at close on the fourth day, needing another 156 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

The first innings lead will give Mumbai the title in the event of a draw.

Muzumdar, who hit 20 fours and a six in his 291-ball knock, raised a 181-run sixth wicket partnership with captain Sairaj Bahutule after Mumbai resumed at their overnight 513-5.

But Bahutule was caught and bowled by left-arm spinner Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan for 92, triggering a late collapse in which the last five wickets fell for 50 runs.

Bahutule struck two quick blows with his leg spin to reduce Tamil Nadu to 94 for two in their second innings before opener Sivaramakrishnan (70) and former-Test batsman Sadagoppan Ramesh (31 not out) steadied the innings.
