Lee bowls Australia to 8-wicket win

August 02, 2003 15:25 IST

Brett Lee claimed four Bangladesh scalps in an explosive opening spell to help world champions Australia claim an eight-wicket victory in the first one-day international on Saturday.

The home team, who thrashed Bangladesh by an innings in each of last month's two Tests, skittled the tourists for 105 in 34 overs after putting them in to bat on a lively pitch in Queensland's tropical northern city of Cairns.

Opener Matthew Hayden, who made an unbeaten 46, dominated a 74-run stand for the second wicket with captain Ricky Ponting (29) as Australia reached 107 for two in 22.3 overs.

The second match in the series is also in Cairns on Sunday, with the third and final game in Darwin on Wednesday.

Lee took four for 25 in his eight-over spell to win the man of the match award. The fiery pace bowler relished the chance to bowl down-wind with the new ball after Glenn McGrath was ruled out of the series with an ankle injury.

One of the world's fastest bowlers, Lee reached a top speed of 154kph and had all the batsmen on the back foot as he continually banged the ball in short.

Bangladesh were in trouble after only eight balls when Hannan Sarkar was run out for one.

Habibul Bashar then failed to get behind the line of a short ball from Lee and was caught behind for a duck, making the score nine for two.

TRAINING TIPS

Lee had offered Bangladesh's bowlers training tips on Friday and gave their batsmen a clinic on Saturday.

The 26-year-old paceman hit Al-Sahariar on the body with two successive deliveries before having him caught at slip for eight

Lee followed up by bowling Alok Kopali around his legs for a duck and then had Sanwar Hossain caught behind for seven as Bangladesh slumped to 33 for five.

Tushar Imran smashed Jason Gillespie through point for three fours in five deliveries, but the fast bowler had his revenge next ball when Imran was caught at second slip by Ricky Ponting for 28.

Wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud was hit on the right thumb by Lee before he was trapped lbw by Gillespie for 18.

Mohammad Rafique (three) gave Gillespie (three for 23) his third wicket when he edged to third slip where Andrew Symonds took a diving catch.

Andy Bichel picked up the last two wickets while Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud was left 25 not out.

Young fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza struck for Bangladesh when he had Adam Gilchrist caught by substitute wicketkeeper Sarkar for 18 with the Australian reply on 29.

Resuming after lunch at 43 for one off nine overs, Hayden and Ponting were coasting before the skipper was bowled by left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique attempting to hit the winning runs.

Hayden lifted Mahmud over mid-wicket in the next over to end the match.
