Tendulkar returns for third ODI

December 31, 2002 10:33 IST

Sachin Tendulkar has been named in India's team for Wednesday's third one-day international against New Zealand in Christchurch.

He had missed the two previous limited-overs matches in the seven-game series after injuring his ankle bowling in the nets before the first game.

New Zealand, who lead the series 2-0 after wins in Auckland and Napier, will be without fast bowler Shane Bond, who has a side strain, team manager Jeff Crowe said on Tuesday.

Michael Mason, who was named in the Test squad that beat India 2-0, but did not play a game, will replace Bond at  Christchurch.

India lost the two previous matches despite having New Zealand at 52 for six chasing 109 in the first match, and Virender Sehwag's century in Napier where they failed to score 51 runs from the final eight overs.

"Most of our batsmen are definitely out of form and haven't scored runs on the tour," captain Saurav Ganguly said. "But it's a new day tomorrow and obviously there is a conscious effort to score some runs."

Ganguly said he was not feeling any additional pressure despite his side's poor run and his own indifferent batting form.

"There's always pressure in this game. If you're the captain of any country, there is pressure. It goes with the job and you have to succeed."

"I've not done well in this series like most of the boys, but this is the same team that has performed so well over the last 10 months. So we've got to take comfort from that and try and do our best in the rest of the series."

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming however, is wary of the underperforming visitors.

"We're expecting India to real start firing at some stage," he said. "However, there's nothing to suggest we won't be able to handle them."

"We've bowled very well. Daryl Tuffey's set the standard right from the first over. If they do get away, our job is to keep them to a score which is competitive and we are confident of being able to chase."

Teams:

New Zealand: Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Mathew Sinclair, Craig McMillan, Lou Vincent, Brendon McCullum, Jacob Oram, Kyle Mills, Daniel Vettori, Daryl Tuffey, Paul Hitchcock, Michael Mason (one to be omitted).

India: Saurav Ganguly (captain), Virender Sehwag, Sanjay Bangar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, V V S Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Ajit Agarkar (one to be omitted).
