The World Environment Day 2015 logo has an Indian touch.
With a thought provoking design, Shibin K K has won the United Nations Environment Programme’s competition for the best logo addressing this year’s theme – ‘Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care’.
This year, UNEP asked participants to visually interpret the theme through the first ever logo design competition for the World Environment Day which is on June 5.
“Shibin’s logo design concept stood out as it encapsulates the need for sustainable consumption within the planet’s regenerative capacity,” says UNEP appreciating his efforts.
UNEP received over 300 designs from 262 participants from over 70 countries worldwide.
“It is a great feeling to be associated with such a big global agenda. I feel happy and proud to be a part of the global campaign to save the environment. I am also delighted about the fact that my logo will be seen in several global platforms, in different languages and will be used across the globe,” says Shibin.
Shibin worked around the theme and came up with a design that gives a simple, visually appealing and meaningful message through the logo.
“The new WED logo shows the planet with different precious resources of the earth in different shades – water, soil, air, green cover and solar energy. The digit ‘7’ represents seven billion people. The idea was to highlight that ‘seven billion people’ of the earth are swallowing a part of itself like the Pac-Man does. If you look closely at the logo, you can make out we are eating up precious resources of the world we live in. It draws attention to the fact that we need to consume with care to preserve our environment,” explains Shibin.
As a prize for his design, Shibin wins a paid trip to visit the Expo Milano 2015 in Italy from May 1 to 31 October 2015.
Shibin who works as a teacher at the Vocational Higher Secondary School, Thalassery in Kerala was also the finalist for the Indian rupee symbol.
The UNEP states that currently, the rate of natural resource consumption globally requires the equivalent of 1.5 planets.
“By 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption,” warns UNEP.
World Environment Day celebrated on June 5 runs worldwide awareness campaigns for protecting the environment.
