At least eight persons have been killed and 18 injured, including two security personnel, in Manipur's Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts following continuous gunbattle between Kukis and Meiteis over the last 72 hours, officials said on Thursday.
Setting aside the conviction of a tribal man in the alleged murder of a woman, the Madhya Pradesh high court has slammed the police saying they investigated the case with the "sole purpose of falsely implicating" him, and directed the state government to pay Rs 42 lakh to him as he spent over 13 years behind bars "awaiting justice".
Hemant Soren staked claim to form the government and the swearing-in ceremony is likely to be held soon. If sworn in, Hemant Soren will be the 13th chief minister of Jharkhand, which was carved out of Bihar on November 15, 2000.
