The Tokyo Olympics had originally been scheduled for 2020 but were postponed by a year because of the pandemic.
Last week, governments across the world grounded the Dreamliner while Boeing halted deliveries after a problem with a lithium-ion battery on a second 787 plane, flown by All Nippon Airways Co, forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing in western Japan.
Japan's confirmed coronavirus infections rose above 1,000 as Olympics organisers dismissed speculation that the Tokyo Summer Games could be cancelled.
An official close to the organising committee, who is involved in drafting the scenarios, said they have been asked to make a simulation in case of a postponement.
Sponsors also worry that organisers have not told them what contingency plans there are in case the pandemic derails the Games again this year.
