A Kolkata court on Monday upheld the order for the trial of the principal and three other teachers of La Martiniere for Boys School on charges of abetment to suicide in the case of Rouvanjit Rawla, who killed himself allegedly after being caned at the school.

A city court on Friday extended the bail of the principal and three teachers of La Martiniere School in connection with the death of 13-year-old student Rouvanjit Rawla. The four accused, including principal Sunirmal Chakravarthy, appeared in the city sessions court of Chief Judge Dipak Saha Ray for confirmation of the bail earlier granted by the chief metropolitan magistrate's court. The other teachers were the head of middle school, L G Ganian, David Ryon and Partha Dutta.
The principal and three teachers of La Martiniere School, facing charges of abetment to the suicide of 13-year-old student Rouvanjit Rawla, on Friday moved a higher court against the magisterial order for their trial.Claiming that the metropolitan judge of Bankshall Court had no jurisdiction to reframe charges, the teachers sought quashing of his order before Chief Sessions Court Judge Dipak Saha Roy.

The Kolkata Police said it is yet to question the principal of La Martiniere for Boys School, a day after he expressed regret for caning a 13-year-old student who allegedly committed suicide.
"It was a mistake. I have apologised to the school board and I am ready to face the consequences," Principal Sunirmal Chakravarthy said. He, however, said the caning should not be linked to the death of the class VIII student Rouvanjit Rawla on February 12. "I think it is stretching it a bit too far," he said.
