The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 24 points at 14,307.
The markets opened in red in line with weak Asian peers.
At first glance, the numbers show a mixed trend.
The index, however, could not hold gains and slipped into negative zone by mid-noon trades. Aggressive profit-taking in the market saw the index slip to 19,338 -- down 581 points from the day's high. The NSE Nifty ended at 5,786, down 61 points.
The Nifty gained 73 points to close at 5,569.
The stock market benchmark Sensex on Monday crossed the psychologically gratifying 19,000- mark in a record four trading sessions on frantic buying in a number of front-line stocks.
The market breadth was fairly positive -- out of 2,837 stocks traded, 1,813 advanced, 968 declined and 56 were unchanged on Tuesday.

In the Sensex kitty, ITC turned star performer by surging 2.45 per cent, followed by NTPC rising 2.19 per cent.

HDFC, ICICI Bank, Wipro, Bharti Airtel, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance, ITC, L&T, ACC,Tata Motors, Ambuja Cements and TCS were major gainers. Tata Steel, Reliance Energy and Jaiprakash Associates were major losers. Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 202 crore, followed by GSS America and Reliance Natural Resources.

Other laggards include HUL, Kotak Bank, NTPC, Infosys, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Hero MotoCorp, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, HDFC, IndusInd Bank and PowerGrid, falling up to 1.77 per cent.
The NSE Nifty gained 57 points to close at 4,142.

The Sensex opened 30 points higher at 12,736.
