Project opponents, led by Posco Pratirodha Sangram Samiti, the organisation spearheading the agitation against the South Korean company, held a massive rally and protest meeting on Saturday at Balitutha, entry point to the project site. People from the affected villages such as Dhinkia, Gobindpur, Nugaon and Gadkujang attended.
The police on Saturday cracked down on agitators protesting against the Posco plant in Orissa, mostly women and children, at Balitutha, the entry point to the proposed plant site. The police fired teargas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the preotestors, injuring at least 20 people. The security personnel ordered nearly 1,000 agitators of the Communist Party of India-backed Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti, who have been on dharna since January 26, to disperse immediately.
The survey is likely to begin soon for Posco's proposed mega steel project in Orissa near Paradip, where security forces were redeployed today after the eviction of protesters five days ago.
There is a growing voice of supporters of major industrial projects in Orissa that have faced opposition from sections in this little-developed state.
