PIX: Slain jawans honoured; curfew clamped in Srinagar

Life in Kashmir has come to a grinding halt following imposition of an indefinite curfew in the wake of the death of a 28-year-old in firing by the paramilitary central reserve police force in the old city.

A wreath laying ceremony was held for the five CRPF troopers killed in a fidayeen attack in the uptown Bemina locality of the capital city on Wednesday morning.

The state police chief, Ashok Prasad, senior officers of CRPF and police laid wreaths on the bodies of the killed central reserve police force troopers in the heavily guarded district police lines on Thursday morning.

The bodies were flown to the native places of the slain jawans.

Of the six injured CRPF troopers, the condition of one is stated to be very critical. The jawan had received critical bullet injuries to his head and chest. He is undergoing treatment at the Soura medical institute along with other wounded soldiers.

Tension is high in the capital city following the killing of Altaf Ahmad Wani, father of three daughters in downtown Zoonimar locality of the city.

The deceased youngster was described as a prominent National Conference worker in the area. The NC has described his killing as 'cold blooded murder'. The locals said Wani was killed in unprovoked firing.

The CRPF has claimed that its personnel had to open fire after an unruly mob attacked them with stones.

A strict curfew was imposed early Thursday morning in capital Srinagar and other major towns, by the authorities.

Police and CRPF troops have been deployed across the capital city and other towns to enforce the curfew.

The state chief minister, Omar Abdullah flew to Srinagar on Wednesday evening and reviewed the prevailing security and law and order situation in the valley at a high-level meeting.

The top brass of the army, paramilitary forces, police and civil administration attended the meeting, an official statement said.

The chief minister was briefed by the concerned officers about the measures put in place to maintain calm and peace in the valley.

The chief minister has reiterated that 'violence has no place in a civilised society.' He has advised all the agencies to exercise maximum restraint in dealing with the current situation.
