Lashkar terrorist killed in Srinagar encounter

Lashkar-e-Tayiba terrorist Hilal Moulvi alias Khalid was gunned down in an encounter on Thursday morning in the in the heart of Jammu and Kashmir capital Srinagar.

Three policemen were wounded in the operation.

A senior police officer said the Special Operations Group, on specific information, surrounded a house where the LeT terrorist was hiding in the Chinkran Mohalla locality in the old city early Thursday morning.

"The terrorist opened fire at the policemen after being challenged. The fire was returned. In the subsequent encounter the terrorist was killed and three policemen, including a sub-inspector, were wounded," the officer said.

According to a police statement, Hilal Moulvi was wanted in many killings in north Kashmir including attacks on sarpanches. Hailing from Deoband, he had joined militancy in 2001.

Arms and ammunition have been recovered from the slain terrorist.

This is the first encounter in capital Srinagar after a long hiatus.
