A Defence Ministry spokesman said that the flames engulfed the wooden scaffolding, which spread to the submarine's outer hull. The spokesperson confirmed that no one was hurt. She added that radiation levels were in check.

The Yekaterinburg normally carries 16 nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The spokesman added that all weapons had been removed from the submarine, and that the reactor was shut down to a safe level before the repairs were carried out.
