"The incident took place at Marine Drive in the wee hours of Wednesday when Sushil Rajendra Kothari, 30, who is in the construction business, was driving his Ford Ikon on his way home to Walkeshwar and rammed it into a scooter killing the rider," Deputy Commissioner of Police Chhering Dorje said.

While the motorist -- Habib Zulfikar Qureshi -- was killed on the spot, the pillion rider received minor injuries and is presently undergoing treatment at J J Hospital, said the police.

Kothari was arrested following the mishap.

'The accused sped away'

"Even after ramming into the scooter, the accused did not stop and sped away towards Malabar Hill, where he dashed into another car. He was arrested from there," Dorje said.

According to the medical report, Kothari was under the influence of alcohol, Dorje said, adding he has been booked for culpable homicide and rash and negligent driving.
