Two gunmen who hijacked a bus and threatened to blow it up released the six remaining hostages and surrendered shortly after midnight Wednesday, report agencies.

Greek national television showed armed police searching the vehicle after the hijackers stepped down the bus with hands on their heads.

The two men, both said to be of Albanian origin, had no explosives on them despite their threats to blow up the bus, the Greek police chief said .

"The bag was empty. They said they had explosives to add weight to their demands," which included a million-euro

ransom, police chief Georges Aguelakos told a press conference.

The bus hijackers did have a rifle and a pistol, which they fired into the air several times during the hostage drama.

An Indian from Kashmir was among the hostages released earlier in batches by the hijackers.

Public Order Minister Georges Voulgarakis said the two men were "Albanian immigrants"  who had been in the country for "six or seven years".

They reportedly wanted the money to return to Albania.
