At least eight Tamil Tiger rebels and a soldier were killed in separate clashes in Sri Lanka's restive north, the military said on Monday.

Seven rebels and a soldier were killed in a gunfight in Vavuniya district while another rebel was shot dead by troops in the Jaffna peninsula last evening, the military said in a statement.

There was no immediate word from the rebels about the military's claims.
