Rajmata, Akali MP miss out on oath

The process of oath-taking by the newly elected members of the twelfth Lok Sabha concluded today, with as many as 537 MPs affirming their resolve to uphold the principles enshrined in the Constitution.

Only two members -- Prem Singh Lalpura of the Akali Dal and Vijayraje Scindia of the Bharatiya Janata Party -- could not take their oaths. While the Rajmata is ill and unable to travel, no explanation was available for Lalpura's absence. Lalpura was reported to have resigned his assembly seat yesterday following his election to the Lok Sabha.

While 535 members had taken their oaths when the oath-taking session ended earlier in the day, two other members -- K H Muniyappa and S Gangadhar, both from the Congress -- were sworn in.

While 380 members were sworn in yesterday, 157 members were sworn in today.

Prominent members who took their oaths today included Madhavrao Scindia, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, Tariq Anwar, Rajesh Pilot, Murasoli Maran, T R Baalu and former speaker Balram Jakhar.
