Narayanan sets precedent, becomes the first President to vote

In a marked departure from tradition, President K R Narayanan on Monday cast his vote at a higher secondary school in the sprawling Rashtrapati Bhavan complex.

According to records, the previous 10 Presidents, in keeping with tradition, had not voted. Thus, Narayanan and wife Usha became India's first first couple to participate in a general election.

The President, it seems, had insisted on casting his vote though it was pointed out to him that all his predecessors had refrained from the act.
