Cong puts up former DGP against Advani in Gandhinagar

The Congress today fielded former director general of police P K Dutta against Bharatiya Janata Party president L K Advani for the Gandhinagar seat in Gujarat besides 13 others candidates, indicating a breakdown of its alliance with the ruling Rastriya Janata Party.

The party had announced its candidates for 10 Lok Sabha seats on January 27. With this announcement the break-up between the two parties is complete. Earlier, RJP chief Shankarsinh Vaghela has also said that the alliance talks were 'closed'.

The Congress is yet to finalise its candidates for the Junagadh and Porbandar seats. In today's list are former Union ministers Uttam Patel (Bulsar-ST) and Manubhai Kotadia (Amreli).

Other candidates cleared include Mahesh Thakkar (Kutch), Bhikubhai Varotaria (Jamnagar), P S Kalariaya (Rajkot), Shaktisinh Gohil (Bhavnagar), Motilal Chawda (Dhanduka-SC), Harubhai Mehta (Ahmedabad), Mansinh Thakore (Mehsana), Vinod Parmar (Patan-SC), Budhaji Chauhan (Kapadvanj), Iqbal Kakuji (Bharuch) and Thakorbhai Nayak (Surat).
