Tatas to exit Bengal if protests continue

August 29, 2008

Stating that the economic rejuvenation of the state was linked to the Tata Motors project, Biman Bose said without it, it was not possible to create employment for the present and future generations.

The Front chairman said if Trinamool Congress had any new proposal, it could suggest it to the government.

He said that discussion could revolve round the proposal on economic rehabilitation and a compensation package which would guarantee that farmers had a livelihood.

The price of their land should be no less than what they were getting from it, he said.

He said that the Tatas were committed to the development of villages around the small car plant.

Some national television channels were showing Tata Motors Pune and Pantnagar plant saying that the Tatas might move out from Singur. "If that happens, it will be a disaster for the state's economy," Bose said.
